U.S. recession helping online dating sites

While the U.S. economy continues to struggle amongst the incessant daily news reports of doom and gloom, it seems that online dating sites are thriving with increasing new members.  According to the CEO of eHarmony, Greg Waldorf, the phenomenon is attributed to the need of a much sought after companionship to get through the hard times.  A survey conducted by eHarmony showed that 25% of women found themselves more likely to seek long-term relationships under the current economic circumstance, rather than having casual, romantic associations.

Another theory is that the overall economic hard press has led men to seek partners in a more cost effective manner by getting to know their potential partner better in an online chatting environment rather than taking risks on costly and unproductive first dates.  According to OkCupid’s CEO, Sam Yagan, most people are just looking for “cheap entertainment” and have turned to alternative ways of having romantic dates at home, such as watching a rental DVD rather than going to the movies or staying-in to an at-home meal rather going to a restaurant.
